Pigeon Poo, Podcasts and Iain Lee

My encounter with Iain Lee, broadcaster on talkRADIO. And podcasts.

I’m a big radio fan. I listened to Iain Lee on BBC 3 Counties Radio for years and loved his breakfast show. It was a sad day when he left. It was a happy day (night) however, when Iain began his new show on talkRADIO, “The Late Night Alternative with Iain Lee” weeknights from ten pm. The show is flippin’ brilliant. Once again Iain can muck about and be far naughtier without getting his wrists slapped. Being an old git I’m usually far too tuckered out to stay up and listen to the show live so turn to his podcasts to get my fix. And thank you Iain, for opening a door on a whole new world. Iain was a guest on Adam Buxton’s podcast and vice versa. I became a Buckles addict, a Podcat. Then Adam sent me off on an adventure to various other recommended podcasts, the stand out being S-Town. Please, please, dear reader, go and listen to S-Town. But I digress, back to Mr Lee.

The Photo Shoot

I’d been in touch with Iain a long while ago about musical matters. My girl Millie had even called into his BBC breakfast show once to have a big row with him about pigeons. She was defending them against Iain’s claim that they’re all manky. Iain had taken a look at my website and when the time was right, he contacted me to do some promotional photos for him. He liked the idea of an industrial feel to the images. I had just the place.

We headed off to Westcott Venture Park in North Bucks. I’m very familiar with this place having gained permission to spend hours poking around in its derelict, grungy, haunting buildings. The site used to be the home of a rocket testing facility in the fifties and sixties and is the location of numerous abandoned spots. The site still whispers clues to its past as you explore. Iain and I clambered around the places I had scoped out. Not phased by cobwebs and copious amounts of pigeon poo we bravely sought out locations for our shoot. I think you’ll agree, the photos work pretty darn well. Iain is just the best bloke to hang out with, the craic was immense. What do you think guys? Guys?

Tres Corazones, Wendover – Food Photography in Buckinghamshire

Tapas & Cocktails – a taste of the Med in leafy Wendover

When I get a call to go to a restaurant to create some Food & Drink Photography, I couldn’t be happier. I get very excited at the thought of playing with beautiful dishes of food, but this time the drinks to accompany were just as artistically pleasing.

Tres Corazones is a thriving tapas restaurant in the middle of Wendover. It’s always busy and buzzy, with Katrina heading up her successful family-run business. Katrina runs the restaurant with her two daughters, hence the name Tres Corazones ‘Three Hearts’. Katrina is also very proud of her exclusively Spanish kitchen team. The authenticity of the food at Tres Corazones is guaranteed.

Tres Corzones is not only renown for its high quality food. It has made a name for itself with its very special selection of cocktails. The ingredients are all the best on the market and made with precision and care. I have to admit I may have had a couple of taster sips. Divine!

If you’ve been to Spain and have a severe craving for authentic tapas, Tres Corazones is waiting to transport you back to that special place. Remember to book in advance!

Ladybird Books for Grown-Ups

Photographing the new range of Ladybird Books for Grown-Ups

I got a call from Hattie at Penguin Books to ask if I’d come along to their London offices on the Strand to photograph the new range of Ladybird Books for Grown-Ups.  I’d heard about the impending release of these books. To have the opportunity to do the promo photography for them made me do a little wee wee dance.

We set up at Penguin Books with a plethora of props and interesting objects carefully collected by Hattie and her team. We smeared ketchup, splashed tea, squished bacon sandwiches and sprinkled love hearts.  The result was a series of cheeky images that made us chuckle.

It’s not often that I photograph products that cause me to spontaneously burst into fits of laughter.  Or lols.  If I start to say or use ‘lols’ without sarcasm I will deserve to receive The Mid-Life Crisis as a gift.  These books are very clever.  There is a book to suit either someone you know or indeed yourself.  I think I can relate to pretty much all of them in one way or another.  Apart from The Hangover.  I try not to have those any more due to a complete inability to survive them whilst retaining satisfactory parenting skills.

I am a huge fan of Ladybird Books and I still have my original collection.  They are real life treasures.  The new range is nothing short of hilarious.  They will become new treasures, cunning gifts and a great way to celebrate Ladybird’s 100th birthday.

You can order the whole range here

Company Photo Shoot

Databasix team up for a company photo shoot

I met Kellie and Regina, the female contingent of Databasix UK Ltd at an Afternoon Tea.  Yes, we were stuffing our faces full of cake and yes, we were networking.  Ladies like us never stop.  Networking that is, not eating cake.  We were attending a business networking event for ladies who belong to The Athena Network. There were lots of business connections being made all around the room and many Rosedene Bakery scones being munched.  Multi-tasking skills at their most useful.

Kellie and Regina and I got talking, got laughing and realised we had lots of things in common.  In addition, the ladies and their colleague Paul were in the market for a photographer to do a company photo shoot for them.  They wanted images for their new website and social media profiles to show them as their true selves.  Databasix is a company that can help make a business’s data work hard for them.  Kellie, Regina and Paul are keen to make this process fun, easy and far from a boring chore.  In short, they’re all a right laugh.  And they chose me to take their photos.

Before I knew it I was heading through the security gate at the sunny Harwell Campus in Oxford.  This is the home of science boffins, cool geeks, atoms, spacey things, and the Databasix office.  We played with our surroundings, messed around with ideas.  I loved every minute of it.  The Databasix team were a dream to work with.  If you need your data to work harder for you, get these guys on board.  You’ll laugh your way to a smooth running, streamlined business with useful data making you lots more pennies.

Chef Portrait Photography – Busy Kitchen

Chef Portrait Photography – The story of a busy service in a hot kitchen

I had to pinch myself to remember that this was a working day.  I was about to set foot into a different world.  A world that I have admired from afar.  For those of you who have learned your jus from your gravy and your tuile from your biscuit will know what I’m talking about.  Having been spellbound by all things chef, this was to prove one of the most exciting shoots of my career so far.  The client?  I.O. Shen Master Grade Knives.  Natalie, the big boss, is already immersed in the world of the chef and wanted some Chef Portrait Photography to appeal to the people who actually use her knives in their kitchens.

Armed with a enormous collection of Natalie’s quite stunning knives we set off to join Head Chef Wayne Sullivan and his team in Cirencester.  When we arrived prep was already in full flow.  I found myself skipping between the different prep areas recording the chefs’ knife skills.  Josh grabbed his new knife eagerly from Natalie and within less than a minute had almost amputated his index finger.  ‘They’re sharp then’, he mumbled in awe.

Lunch service soon began and things really started to heat up in the kitchen.  Chef Wayne was a sight to behold, in command of his team and creating works of art on the plates.  A splash of shouting and drizzle of swearing was all that was needed to create a smooth running service with very happy customers.

I love working with I.O.Shen.  Natalie has fabulous ideas and together we create lovely images.  I’m so pleased with the end results.  So is Natalie.  She has all of the images plastered across her office in canvas.  She stares dreamily at them while thinking up her next knife design.

Food Photography Buckinghamshire by Kelly Jo – Rosedene Bakery Aylesbury

Anna is cooking up something scrummy to get VERY excited about at Rosedene Bakery – Food Photography Buckinghamshire

This is where Food Photography Buckinghamshire gets down right devourable.  Local business lady Anna Atkins-Carter visited my studio.  She was laden with samples of the most delicious, delectable, devourable delicacies you could ever wish to lay eyes on.  It took every fibre of my will power not to knock her to one side and dive head first into the Victoria Sponge.  Anna has created a gorgeous new concept….homemade cakes and bakes just like your granny made.  These are  delivered to your door, ready to be demolished by you and your loved ones.  Not only does Anna supply her eager customers with cakes and teatime treats, she also has a wonderful new product.  Afternoon Tea delivered to your door! Scones, Bakewells and other fine fair for a ready-to-go treat.  You can even hire vintage china tea sets from her to really impress your guests.  Anna is going to be offering Baking Lessons too. These are workshops that get you back to basics and build your confidence in the kitchen.  Anna’s own granny inspired a love of baking in her and she is dedicated to passing that same inspiration on to others.

From a food photography point of view this was a great job for me.  Anna left me to style the images which is something I love to do.  I used props from around the house along with the pieces Anna brought with her.  I love to set a scene.  Adding interesting props makes the images have depth and interest.  I want to be able to show my client’s products in the most attractive light possible.  I believe the answer to this is attention to detail.

Commercial Photographer Buckinghamshire – Premises, Staff and Product Images

Beautiful products, stunning surroundings, lovely business lady…perfect working conditions!

What a lovely thing to be able to say.  I’m a Commercial Photographer Buckinghamshire.  Never have I photographed a location that smelled so good.  The Littlecote Soap Co. is a gorgeous local business headed up by the captivating, vivacious and wonderfully creative Elaine Stavert.  Elaine has found success by mixing potions, playing with aromas and combining natural ingredients to create a divine collection of soaps and toiletries.  All of the organic products are made and sold at their little farm shop in Dunton, Buckinghamshire.  Customers delight in browsing for gifts and treats, the very experience of walking into the shop full of beautiful aromas is worth the visit alone.  There is a large selection of different ranges, each with it’s own signature scent.  The most popular range is Gin & Tonic and my particular fave is White Wine and Fig – scrumptious!  The products are also available to purchase via their website www.littlecotesoap.co.uk.  If you can get to the shop, go!  It’s just delicious and full of great gift ideas….don’t forget to treat yourself too.

Product Photography Buckinghamshire – Ad Campaign and Promo work for client I.O. Shen Master Grade Knives

Earlier in the year I was lucky enough to spend a day cooking with Masterchef Finalist Andrew Kojima.  He introduced me to his array of beautiful professional chef’s knives and I immediately fell in love with I O Shen.  The knives are perfection and working with them was an absolute joy.  Koj kindly hooked me up with Natalie from I O Shen who just so happened to be based just down the road from me.  In the blink of an eye we were in the studio photographing their new 10th Anniversary Gift Set, creating images for an ad campaign.  With some tremendous artwork jiggerypokery from graphics genius Julie Lodge of Jamtastic Design, I’m sure you’ll agree the final result is just devine.  What a sense of pride I felt when I saw the ad in the latest edition of Jamie (Oliver) Magazine and Great British Food.

There are some little tricks I use in the studio to achieve a look.  Natalie and I worked as a team to achieve the look we needed.  Product photography is an exact science and photographing metal is a challenge.  Reflections, light and shine all play a role.  With a lot of patience and careful adjustments we nailed the shoot in a day.

Take a look at some of the behind the scenes, the gorgeous knives and the ad itself!

Why is a good business portrait so important?

I met Tara at an Athena Network training day.  She greeted me with her warm smile and at once I knew I had just made a friend, she has that effect.  Tara runs a very successful Virtual Assistant company and confided in me that she had no professional images of herself for her social media.  She was making do with a family ‘snap’ of herself in Paris in the rain and felt it didn’t represent her professionally.   Within a couple of weeks Tara arrived at my studio armed with her smile.  There ensued a relaxed chat/gossip/network/brainstorm/photo shoot and lo!  We had our images.  Tara now proudly uses them for her social media…and proud she should be.

Well crafted Head Shots for all your profiles and website is essential if you want to give a professional impression.  Be recognised too – don’t use photographs of yourself from 1987 sporting a bubble perm.  Let’s get you looking your best so that you can really SHOUT from the internet!
